Choosing a restaurant POS in Canada.

Buyer guides, honest vendor comparisons, and what Canadian rules actually require โ€” written for operators who are shortlisting a point of sale system, not for search engines.

What to check before you sign anything

Most Canadian POS shortlists come down to six questions. The guides below go deep on each, but this is the short version โ€” and it applies whichever vendor you end up choosing.

  1. What is the real monthly cost? Ask for software, per-terminal, payment-processing and add-on module fees as one number. Many quotes list only the first.
  2. Does it handle every province you operate in? GST, HST, PST and QST differ by province, and Quebec has its own mandatory sales-recording rules for restaurants.
  3. Is it genuinely bilingual?Quebec's language rules apply to guest-facing screens and receipts โ€” not just the manager's back office.
  4. Where does your data live?Data residency matters under PIPEDA and Quebec's Law 25. Ask which country the servers are in, and get it in writing.
  5. What happens when the internet drops? Ask what the kitchen and the card terminal do offline, and what happens to tickets already in flight.
  6. What does leaving cost? Contract length, early-termination fees, hardware ownership at the end of a lease, and whether you can export your own sales history.
