How to read any Canadian POS shortlist
Most "best POS" lists rank on feature checklists. Canadian operators lose money somewhere else: on currency, on per-device fees, and on what the entry plan quietly excludes. Those three things decide the real bill far more often than the feature grid does.

- Per location vs per device — a per-screen or per-terminal fee means growth costs you twice: once in hardware, once in subscription, every month, forever.
- What the entry tier excludes — free and starter tiers routinely gate the exact restaurant features (coursing, table management, kitchen routing) that made you shop for a restaurant POS.
- Processing rates — a lower monthly fee paired with a higher card rate is usually the more expensive deal once volume is real.

Square for Restaurants — best free starting point
Square publishes genuine Canadian pricing: Free at $0/mo, Plus at $60 CAD per location per month, and a custom Premium tier. In-person card processing is 2.5%, debit is 0.75% + 7c, and online is 2.8% + 30c.
It is the strongest option if you are opening with very little capital, run counter service, and can live inside the free tier's limits. The trade-off is that the free tier is deliberately basic, and Square's hardware is the path it wants you on.

TouchBistro — established choice for full-service dining
TouchBistro publishes Point of Sale from $69/mo and an Essentials Bundle from $119/mo. Those figures are in US dollars, so budget the exchange rate on top.
It has a long track record in Canadian full-service restaurants and a mature table-management model. If your floor is complex and you want a widely-deployed, well-understood system, it earns its place on the shortlist.

Lightspeed Restaurant — deepest inventory and multi-location reporting
Lightspeed publishes Starter at $69/mo, Essential at $189/mo and Premium at $399/mo, all in US dollars. Its kitchen display is priced separately at $30 per screen per month on every plan.
If you run several locations and need serious inventory and analytics, Lightspeed is the most capable option on this list. Note what the per-screen KDS fee does at scale: three kitchen screens across two locations is $2,160 a year in kitchen display subscription alone, before the POS plan.

Toast — broadest ecosystem, least price transparency
Toast does not publish a public price list; pricing is quote-based and denominated in US dollars. It has the widest add-on ecosystem of anything here, and it is genuinely strong for large, high-volume operations with staff to run it.
The honest caution for a small Canadian independent is that a quote-gated, USD-denominated contract is hard to compare and hard to exit. Ask for the all-in monthly figure in writing, in CAD, including processing, before you sign anything.

Clover — fast to deploy through payment resellers
Clover is usually sold through a payment processor or bank reseller rather than direct, which is why the same terminal can carry very different monthly costs and contract terms depending on who sells it to you.
It deploys quickly for counter service. Read the reseller's contract carefully: term length, early-termination fees and the processing rate are set by the reseller, not by Clover.
