A QR-first restaurant POS for Barrie, in patio season and through the winter.
Barrie runs on two seasons of patios, a busy summer waterfront and a health unit whose inspection sign hangs by your door. Waitery puts your menu on each guest's phone through a table QR code. Guests order and pay there, and the ticket reaches your kitchen. It costs $14 CAD per location per month, and setup is free.

Pick the licence that matches how you sell.
Barrie's licensing by-law has more than 60 categories. Four are for restaurants:
- Restaurant (No Liquor).
- Restaurant / Tavern, if you serve alcohol.
- Restaurant / Tavern Patio Extension, for a patio on your own private property.
- Restaurant Drive Thru / Take Out Only: no seating except for people waiting on their order.
A new restaurant licence needs a fire inspection that sets your occupant load, a health unit certificate of inspection, zoning, a by-law officer's sign-off and $2,000,000 in liability insurance. Alcohol adds a police check and your liquor licence. You apply through APLI, the City's online permit tool, and the licence lasts one year from the day it is issued.
Your AGCO application also needs municipal clearance: a City form, letters from Building Services and Barrie Fire, and a health unit letter you request yourself. Fees are $52, $204 for the building letter and $218.25 for the fire inspection. Once inspections pass, the City says the package takes about two weeks.

Downtown patios, summer and winter.
In the Downtown Barrie BIA, patios sit on City property and can reach the edge of the street, with a temporary sidewalk built over parking spaces. There are two seasons:
- Summer Downtown Patio Program: the second Friday of April to November 15.
- Winter Downtown Patio Program: November 16 to the second Thursday of April. Permits are limited so snow clearing can continue, and each patio must leave at least 1.5 metres of sidewalk.
You apply for a Right-of-Way Activity permit. Get the BIA's signed patio terms first (705-734-1414), then bring a health unit certificate, any patio liquor licence, and insurance of $2 million per occurrence and $5 million aggregate. The site plan shows every table, which is also your list of patio QR codes.
A first patio costs $400, covering the permit and one inspection, with no sidewalk lease that year. After that it is $400 plus $0.40 per square foot per month. The checklist asks for at least 1.8 metres of sidewalk and 2.4-metre temporary sidewalks. Downtown garbage goes out Tuesday and Friday. Outside the BIA, a patio needs a site plan through APLI. And dogs are allowed on a patio if no food is prepared there; that is your call.

Inspection Connection: the green sign and the online record.
Barrie restaurants are inspected by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. Its inspectors meet new operators before they open; after that, most inspections are unannounced. Food premises are inspected at least one to three times a year, depending on the food, how much handling it takes and your track record.
The results go two places. After each inspection you post a green certificate of inspection sign showing the date. The report also goes online for two years, with critical and non-critical infractions and any legal action. When a restaurant changes hands, only results since the new owner took over are shown. A red CLOSED sign goes on the door if an inspector finds an immediate health hazard.
You need at least one person with a food handler certificate on site every hour you are open. From September 30, 2026, the health unit no longer runs the exam in person, so new hires take it online with an approved provider. Inspectors answer at 705-721-7520.

A four-season city with a summer peak.
The City counted 998,199 overnight visitors in 2025, worth $212,432,270 to the local economy, and hotel occupancy reached 70.4%. Many guests have never seen your menu. A QR menu with photos lets them read it at their own pace.
Summer brings its own logistics. From June 15 to September 15, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., parking within about 500 metres of several waterfront parks is for resident permit holders only. Downtown, Open Air Dunlop closes part of Dunlop Street on select dates, and the Troubadour Festival plays at Meridian Place. On those days, pickup orders from your own page help.
Tax and wage, set once.
Ontario charges one 13% HST, printed as a single line on every bill.
